Come see, learn about, and understand Pittsburgh in new ways through an historical architectural walking tour and a Ducky Tour.

37.jpgThe University of Pennsylvania Alumni Club of Western Pennsylvania will be sponsoring both an historical architectural walking tour of downtown Pittsburgh hosted by Al Tannler, Historical Collections Director at the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation (www.phlf.org) and a separate Ducky Tour (www.justduckytours.com) on its signature land and boat cruiser through Pittsburgh on Saturday, May 22nd, 2010.

The walking tour with Al Tannler will be from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon beginning at Station Square, next to the Hard Rock Cafe. The Ducky Tour will be from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. also departing from Station Square, near Bessemer Court and the Hard Rock Cafe.

An option for an informal lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe, between tours will be available for purchase independently at the restaurant from approximately 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. A 15% discount on a lunch purchase at the Hard Rock Cafe is available for those who purchase a ticket for the 1:30 p.m. Ducky Tour.

$15 per person for Ducky Tour only  

Package Rate for Walking Tour and Ducky Tour together:

$20 per person for Penn and Wharton Club Members and their guests
$25 per person for general Ivy League alumni and their guests

If you wish to participate in the 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. informal lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe, please purchase a free ticket for lunch registration. We want to make sure that there is plenty of room at the table for everyone. All participants are responsible for the cost of their own meals and beverages.

If you are joining us for the historical architectural walking tourplease plan to arrive at Station Square by 10:15 a.m.; we will begin promptly at 10:30 a.m. from our departure point next to the Hard Rock Cafe.

If you are joining us for the Ducky Tourplease plan to arrive at Station Square by 1:15 p.m.we will depart promptly at 1:30 p.m. from our departure point near Bessemer Court and the Hard Rock Cafe.
 

A brief biography for the leader of our walking tour, Mr. Albert M. Tannler:

Albert M. Tannler has been Historical Collections Director of the Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation since January 1991. He writes on the history of architecture and the decorative arts in Western Pennsylvania and oversees the operation of the James D. Van Trump Library and the Frank B. Fairbanks Rail Transportation Archive.

Mr. Tannler is the author of A List of Buildings and Architects in Pittsburgh and Allegheny County 1950-2005, 3rd edition (2005), Pittsburgh’s Landmark Architecture 1785-1950: A Concise Bibliography (1994), and Allegheny County Courthouse and Jail Walking Tour (2007).

Mr. Tannler has explicated what Pittsburgh Post-Gazette critic Patricia Lowry has called “Pittsburgh’s great treasury of historic stained glass” in Charles J. Connick: His Education and His Windows in and near Pittsburgh (2008), William Willet in Pittsburgh 1897-1913: A Research Compendium (2005), and in articles and book reviews in The Journal of Stained Glass {British Society of Master Glass Painters}, and other publications.

He contributed to African American Architects: A Biographical Dictionary 1865-1945 (Routledge, 2004). He has co-edited several books published by the Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation.

He has lectured for the Decorative Arts Trust, the Frick Art & Historical Center, Pittsburgh, Boston Back Bay Historical Society, and the Charles J. Connick Stained Glass Foundation Ltd., Boston.
