New CEO is Wharton Grad, Formerly at Cooper Health System

  Dr. Christopher Olivia, WG '94

Dr. Christopher Olivia, the new chief executive officer of the West Penn Allegheny Health System is  shaking up the system by putting a temporary hold on new capital spending, changing top executives and trying to speed up the long-promised consolidation of services and departments, according to recent articles in the Post Gazette.

Dr. Olivia, WG ‘94, became CEO of West Penn Allegheny Health Systems in March. According to the PG, Dr. Olivia brought to Pittsburgh a rare combination of qualifications for a health system CEO -- both a license to practice medicine and an MBA -- as well as a reputation as an up-and-coming executive within the industry. He was just 40 years old when appointed chief executive of the nonprofit Cooper Health System in southern New Jersey in 2002. Prior ties to Pennsylvania include a bachelor's degree from Penn State University, a medical degree from Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia and an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School.
